TECHNICIAN TUESDAY: Brian Root

For this week’s Technician Tuesday, we headed over to the all-new West Herr Subaru of Rochester to meet Technician, Brian Root. Brian has been in the automotive industry for over thirty years now!

Brian mentions that his original plan was to work on boats and ended up working at a marina for a little bit. He says that didn’t quite work out the way he has planned, but it was then that he made the switch into automotive. He started with a local Chevrolet dealership, which is where he stayed for about thirty years!

Within the last few years, Brian switched over to the Subaru brand. He says that in his free time he still likes to work on Chevy’s, but genuinely enjoys working with the Subaru brand. When Brian started at Subaru, it had not yet been acquired by West Herr, but he mentions it was a smooth transition. “West Herr was really good to us, so I stayed,” Brian says.

In Brian’s free time, he loves to stay busy! He loves to spend time with his granddaughter and travel with his family. He’s also found joy in making his own craft beers at home. He loves curling and spending time on the water on his boat!

Brian says that in his time in the field, he’s had a lot of great co-workers who’ve turned into friends. “Alex Suro has always been a great co-worker. He’s taught me a lot of tricks and short cuts for different things,” he says.

Brian says that within the next two-years, he should be a Senior Master Technician! There are a number of tests that go into the certification over the course of five-years.

When asking Brian what is one tool that he cannot live without, he has a very simple answer. A pen! He mentions being in the business for so long, it is interesting to see the transition from physically writing all work to now using a computer.

Brian says he loves not being stuck behind a desk all day. “As a technician, we have a lot of freedom, that’s one of my favorite parts of the job,” he adds.

West Herr Subaru of Rochester is a brand-new state of the art facility and Brian mentions he and his co-workers are still adjusting to the new space, but they’re loving it! Take a look at the space !
