TECHNICIAN TUESDAY: Tim Mahar
For this week’s Technician Tuesday, we headed over to West Herr Chevrolet of East Syracuse to meet Service Manager, Tim Mahar! Tim has been in the automotive industry for over thirty years now!
In high school, Tim attended BOCES for an automotive program. He mentions that in school, he couldn’t find his niche in the typical subjects such as math, science, etc. One thing he did know was that he always had an interest in cars and says that going to BOCES helped him learn his craft. Upon graduation, he began his career at a local Chevrolet dealership and since then he’s stuck with the brand.
When he began his career in automotive, he was a technician which is where he stayed for most of his tenure. He then moved up to become the Shop Foreman for about eight years, and recently in the last three years, Tim has transitioned to be a Service Manager!
East Syracuse Chevrolet was acquired into the West Herr brand just over three years ago. When being acquired, Tim had been working there for about 19 years at that point. He says the first memory that pops into his mind with West Herr was meeting our executive team. “President/CEO, Scott Bieler, came in here with his team and we were pretty intimidated at first,” Tim mentions.
In Tim’s time in automotive, he said he’s been through a few acquisitions, but this one was different. “The reason I stayed was because of Scott Bieler,” he says. “Being a manager and hearing how Scott wants his management team to act, knowing their core values aligned with mine, I just knew it was a company I’d want to stay working for,” he says.
Tim loves to spend time with his wife, family, and dog outside of work! He and his wife love to try local breweries and sometimes bring their Boston Terrier, Diggs! He is a father of two kids and a new grandfather to a beautiful baby girl!
Tim wanted to shout out his Warranty Administrator, Rachel Koster, and mentions he has a lot of fun working and joking around with her!
Tim is proud to have worked his way up to be a Service Manager and he says a personal goal of his is to help his store become one of the top in the group. “We started off a little slow just getting acquainted with the West Herr way, but we are figuring it out now,” he adds.
Tim talks on how much he loves his job, but he says the most rewarding part is hiring an employee and watching them grow and become successful. A piece of advice he shared for anyone questioning a career as a technician is to come and try out West Herr! “West Herr really knows how to take care of their technicians,” Tim says. “Being a technician myself, I know the pitfalls and struggles that come with the territory and I can relate to my staff,” he adds.
